"Chickadees and trees" digital painting was inspired by a memory of my youth. In the wild seasonal marsh behind my neighbor's house was an old dead apple tree. One frosty winter day preteen me climbed high enough to enjoy the view of the pristine newly fallen snow blanketing the meadows and abandoned apple orchard that stretched behind the yards on our street. Suddenly a flock of chickadees appeared and landed in the tree. Unafraid and apparently surprised and delighted by my presence they chirped and chattered within inches of where I perched. Cocking their heads and looking at me as if to say "we found a human in a tree, what the heck?" Soon the novelty wore off and they all flew away, but the memory remains!

I love seeing black-capped chickadees in the marsh! They follow me hiking all the time. They are even cuter when the males sing their "Hey Sweetie" song. :)
